Week ending 28/03/24

Date: 16th Mar 2024 @ 8:18am

Happy Holidays! This half term has really flown by! We cannot believe that the children have been in school for two terms, with only one full term left in Reception. The children have been enjoying the change from winter to spring, especially as we have been exploring lots of new life. The children have showed real skill and artistic flair making their Easter Cards this year. I hope you agree that they have made a lovely job when you receive them! Please check your child's book bag.

READING BOOKS - PLEASE READ!

We are experiencing a high volume of books that are not being returned each week. Unfortunately, we will now be monitoring this more rigorously after the Easter holidays. Therefore, starting from the first week back, if you do not return your child's Little Wandle book on a Thursday we will be unable to exchange it for for their next reading book that week. By not returning the book this is impacting on the learning and progression of other children in the class. Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

Summer Term Dates

  • Friday 19th April- Easter Bonnet parade. Come into school wearing your best Easter bonnet for a parade!
  • Friday 24th May- Sport’s Day! Children to come in PE and their house colours. Parents are invited to watch from 9am to 10am.

Easter Challenge Booklet

Each child has brought home an Easter challenge booklet in their book bag. This is completely optional but each child who returns the completed booklet will receive a red sticker for their sticker book.

Family Support

We would like to draw your attention to a useful resource that could help your family.

Home - My Family Coach- This website provides lots of information about things such as behaviour, screen time, friendships and helping your child with additional needs.

Little Wandle (Phonics)

Please see the downloadable attachment below to practise the sounds/words we have been learning this week. This week was assessment week so you will be find your child’s percentage in their reading records; 80% is on track and able to move onto the next set of books. Please keep reading with your child over the Easter holidays and speak to your child’s teacher if you have concerns about their progress.

You can also look at the following resources on the Little Wandle website to find out more about phonics: https://www.littlewandlelettersandsounds.org.uk/resources/for-parents/?utm_medium=email&_hsmi=251841354&_hsenc=p2ANqtz-99_x4j2xRyMa3Wf9Z3G-JOpJww1XqE6RJvg0B-fbRoYLMwF73nqfGqrth0KNCCv4hj2DxPIbt7m_6hlk1XWKIn_eeY4TPwAd5r51zst3B4BAt7ypM&utm_content=251841354&utm_source=hs_email

Maths

This week we have been thinking about the language associated with addition and subtraction. Did you know that a child learns over 100 new words in Reception in their maths lessons alone? We learnt to count up starting from any number (and the language ‘more’, ‘add’, ‘plus’, ‘altogether’) and back from any number (‘less’, ‘minus’, ‘take away’ and ‘subtract’) To do this, the children needed to be able to find one more and less without any resources to help them. We played lots of great games and used a special more/less dice on to help us become more familiar with the signs. We love the board game ‘Sum Swamp’ for this as well!

On Monday, we read the story of ‘The Pirates are Coming’ again…but this time we found a letter from Tom’s Mum in the back! As a class we thought about the structure of a letter to reply to Tom's mum and what we might include. In the afternoon, we had a reflective Jack the Dog session as we spoke about the meaning of the cross and how Jesus died on Good Friday.

On Tuesday, the children wrote responses to Mum's letter as if they were Tom and read them to a teacher. This has been uploaded to Tapestry with a specific writing target which we will be working on with your child next term.

On Wednesday, we LOVED performing our class assemby for our families. Thank you so much for coming! The children showed such wonderful courage and confidence and we were so proud of them all.

On Thursday, we celebrated our achievements at celebration worship. We also had one final class worship with Jack the Dog to complete our Easter story of Jesus' resurrection. We spoke about how Spring is a time of new life such as little lambs in the field and chicks popping out of eggs and not just about the chocolate we devour! To finish another wonderful term, we spent our final moments together going on an Easter egg hunt in the school grounds.

Well done to our Stars of the Term, Chloe and Florence!

There was no mystery reader today as we had an early finish in preparation for Easter weekend. Please speak to your child’s class teacher to put a date in the diary if you would like to be mystery reader. We still have many available dates next term so please get in touch if you can help!

Thank you for all your support this half term. Have a fantastic Easter!
