British Values Statement

At Tarporley CE Primary School, we actively promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. These values help prepare our pupils to become responsible, respectful and active citizens who can contribute positively to life in modern Britain.

As a Church of England school, our Christian vision and values are at the heart of everything we do. Our values of LOVE, FRIENDSHIP, TRUST, HOPE, FORGIVENESS, JOY & CELEBRATION provide a strong foundation for the way we treat and respect one another.

Our BOOKS approach further supports this by encouraging children and adults to demonstrate Bravery, adopt an Outward-facing mindset, embrace Opportunities, develop Knowledge and Skills, and deepen their Spirituality.

British values are not taught as a separate subject. They are woven throughout school life and are promoted through our curriculum, collective worship, RE, PSHE, pupil voice, behaviour expectations, relationships and wider opportunities.

Democracy

We encourage children to understand the importance of having a voice and being listened to. Our pupils have opportunities to contribute to decisions that affect them through pupil voice, questionnaires, discussions and our School Parliament.

Children take part in democratic processes, including elections for representatives. They learn that democracy involves listening to different views, making informed choices, respecting the views of others and understanding that decisions are made through agreed processes.

We encourage children to take responsibility for their learning, their school and their wider community.

The Rule of Law

Children learn that rules and laws help to keep people safe, protect individual rights and enable communities to work together.

Our school expectations and behaviour procedures help children understand the importance of agreed rules and the consequences of choices. Through our curriculum and wider experiences, pupils develop an age-appropriate understanding of the importance of the law and their responsibilities as members of society.

Children are encouraged to distinguish right from wrong, understand the consequences of their actions and respect the rights of others.

Individual Liberty

We encourage children to develop confidence, independence and a strong sense of personal responsibility within a safe and supportive environment.

Children are given appropriate opportunities to make choices, express their views, develop their interests and take responsibility for their own learning and actions.

Through our curriculum, including PSHE, Relationships Education and online safety, children learn how to make informed and safe choices, understand their rights and recognise the importance of respecting the rights and freedoms of others.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance

Respect is central to our school ethos. Our Christian values encourage children to treat others with dignity, kindness and compassion.

We teach children to appreciate that people may have different backgrounds, cultures, beliefs, identities, experiences and views. Through our RE, PSHE, English, history, geography, collective worship and wider curriculum, pupils learn about different faiths, cultures and perspectives.

We actively challenge prejudice, discrimination and bullying and teach children that differences should be respected rather than used as a reason for unfair or unkind treatment. This is consistent with our Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Policy and our commitment to ensuring that everyone in our school community feels valued, included and that they belong.

We provide opportunities for pupils to learn about and engage with the wider community and the diverse society in which they live.

Preparing Children for Life in Modern Britain

Through our curriculum and wider school experiences, we help children to develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and understanding they need to participate positively in society.

We encourage our pupils to be respectful, responsible and active citizens, able to listen to others, express their views appropriately, make informed choices, understand their responsibilities and contribute positively to their community.

Our aim is that every child develops the confidence and understanding to ‘Let Their Light Shine’.
