Weekly Blog 07/03/25

Date: 4th Mar 2025 @ 4:41pm

Happy Friday! This week we have been reading Frances Stickley's book ‘What will I be?’. We have been thinking about what it would like to be a grown up and discussed the different things we want to do when we are older. The children came up with some great ideas such as eat look after animals, drive a racing car, go to the desert, live in an apartment, move to France and so much more! Over the week the children have met a range of adults from different professions to talk about their job, find out more about their career and ask them some questions. Thank you so much to those who have volunteered to talk to the children about their jobs. We can’t wait for the children to feel inspired to dream big.

Little Wandle (Phonics)

Please see the downloadable attachment below to practise the sounds/words we have been learning this week. Please can you have a quick look for any Little Wandle books you may have lying around at home. We seem to be missing a couple from a few sets of books. Thank you.

Reading Records

Thank you for your continued diligence looking after and bringing back our Little Wandle books every week and thank you for letting us know when your child reads to you  and using the Reading Record for reading correspondence.

As you know your child reads to a school adult at least three times a week and we are lucky enough to have some reading volunteers who pop in and do some extra reads. Having visited a Little Wandle school recently, we are keen to maintain and keep developing our high standard of reading provision. From now on, instead of spending precious reading practice minutes writing in the Reading Record, the school adults will be focusing on moving your child's reading on. Miss Selwyn will, of course, continue to check your child's Reading Record every week (Thursdays probably) and respond to any questions or comments you have so please keep writing in it (or get your child to write in the date and book title!).

Another element of reading that we are focusing on is the way our children handle our books; they should be placed flat at all times (except when skimming through to work out if it is a fiction or non-fiction book). Apart from the good practice of reading it will also help to maintain our glorious (and very expensive!) collection of Reading Practice books.

On Monday, Rose's mummy came in to talk to the children about being a veterinary nurse. She set up a series of stations for the children to delve deeper into the veterinary world and our role play has never looked better. In the afternoon we had Eva's daddy come to tell us about the world of motorsport. The children marvelled at the fast car and Mr North had many children (and adults) from around the school come to check out his cool job.

On Tuesday, this time Rose's daddy came to tell the children about being a doctor, specifically a GP. The children got to look inside his doctor's bag and discovered the different equipment he may use each day. In the afternoon, as it was Shrove Tuesday we held our traditional pancake race. We hope you enjoyed eating your delicious pancakes at home.

On Wednesday, the school nurses came in to check our hearing and vision. Mr Elton also took the children outside for a fun-filled PE lesson on throwing and catching and was impressed with our teamwork skills.

On Thursday, it was World Book Day! We dressed up as our favourite book characters or our pyjamas and delved into our book 'A Handful of Buttons'. This is a lovely story that teaches us about how families are different, unique and special. Families are as diverse as a handful of buttons, but something that they do have in common is LOVE! We enjoyed joining in with lots of activities based around this story.

On Friday, Monty's mummy came in to tell us about the law as she is a judge. The children got to attend a court hearing and became jurors in a major crime...who stole the chocolate digestive?! Miss Selwyn was put on trial and put forward the evidence to plead her case. Contrary to what the children may tell you, I am innocent! One child even acted as my lawyer to prove my innocence. Bourbons are more my thing anyway!

Well done to our Star of the Week, Benjamin!

Our mystery reader this week was Walter's Dad. Thank you for coming to share a number of stories with us!

We hope you have a lovely weekend! Back to a normal week on Monday.
