Week Ending 28/06/24
Date: 21st Jun 2024 @ 3:40pm
Happy Friday! Well it certainly feels like summer has made an appearance this week. Lots of sunshine and smiles from Dormice and Hedgehogs with lots of opportunities to get out and about to make the most of the lovely weather. Please may we remind you that as the days get warmer, ensure your child brings in a water bottle, a sun hat and apply sun cream before school. All of which should be labelled. If your child requires a top up through the day we advise the roll-on sun creams which your child can independently apply themselves. Thank you.
Transition to Year 1 – Monday 7th July
From Monday 7th July, Reception children will no longer use the community entrance to enter school in the morning. As they will do in Year 1, children will be able to enter school in the mornings through the green side gate to the right of the main school entrance or the Poppy Mount car park gate. There will be school staff on the gate in the morning (usually the office staff, Mr Martin, Mrs Forrester or KS2 staff) but EYFS and KS1 staff will meet the children at these gates for the first few days. They will then walk around to the front playground outside of their doors and wait until an EYFS staff member can let them inside. This is to ensure a smoother transition and get them into the habit for their move to Year 1 in September. Messages must be given to office staff on the gate or emailed to the school office, (admin@tarporleyce.cheshire.sch.uk) thank you. The children are more than ready for the challenge of Year 1 and we can’t wait to watch them let their light shine in Key Stage 1!
There will be no EYFS members of staff at the Community Entrance from this day.
On Friday 12th July, you will be informed via email which class your child will be in next year. As staff, we will not be telling your child which class they are in so please discuss this with them at home. A great deal of time and thought is taken to ensure that your child will continue to flourish on their school journey here at Tarporley CE. We always have their best interests at heart to ensure that they have a seamless transition to the next stage of their development. On Tuesday 16th July, the children will experience an afternoon as a Year 1 child as they get to meet their new teacher, get to know their classmates and play in their new classroom. At the end of the day, parents will have the opportunity to meet the teachers and learn about Year 1 including a tour of your child's new classroom. This is for parents only, so Miss Selwyn will look after the children in the classroom for those of you who can make it.

Talking Point
This week we shared our No Outsiders book for this half term; ‘Red Rockets and Rainbow Jelly’ by Sue Heap and Nick Sharratt. In the book, the characters like everything different but still like each other. We asked the children to pair up and find one thing they both like, then we added more children to the groups each time but they still had to find things in common. In the end, we had to find one thing the whole class liked! Therefore, our talking point this week is, can you be friends with someone who likes different things to you? Why or why not?
Little Wandle (Phonics)
This term we continue our Phase 4 phonics journey! The children do not learn any new phonemes or graphemes. Instead, they are taught to further manipulate the phonemes and graphemes they have already learnt. They will begin to explore more polysyllabic words (words containing more than one syllable) and read and spell words containing adjacent consonants. E.g. string, milk, brush, scoop etc. Phase 4 requires the children to blend an increasing number of sounds together.
This week we have had been thinking about suffixes such as -ing and -ed. It is important that the children learn to chunk the word to read and spell for example, j-u-m-p/i-n-g. When blending words with -ed, sometimes we say them as /t/ (such as helped), or /id/ (painted) or just /d/ (laughed). There is more information here: For parents - Letters and Sounds (littlewandlelettersandsounds.org.uk)
In Maths, we have been consolidating our understanding of numbers to 10. Starting with subitising, the children have built on their skills of recognising small quantities to 5 and moved on to seeing the 'numbers within' numbers. E.g. inside 3 there is a 2 and a 1, so 3 is composed of 2 and 1. Through practical exploration, discussion and problem solving, this process has been repeated for all of the numbers within 10. We have continued to use a rekenrek to explore relationships between numbers and the parts that they can be split into.
- comparing by looking, then by matching 1-to-1
- comparing groups of objects that are different sizes/colours/attributes, using the language of comparison
- showing (through practical activities) an understanding that numbers can be split into smaller parts
- showing (through practical activities) how to recombine parts to make a whole amount
- showing that some numbers to 10 can be split into 2 equal parts
- knowing that 5 is a key anchor in our number system, from which other numbers may be derived
- beginning to generalise about ‘1 more than/1 less than’ within 10
- developing a sense of magnitude, e.g. knowing that 8 is a lot more than 2, but 4 is only a little bit more than 2.
On Monday, a letter from the evil peas fell out of our book! They’re on the loose and we need to stop and catch them before they cause even more trouble. The children set to work by planning to capture the peas by making traps. They drew their traps, listed the materials that they would use and explained how it would work.
On Tuesday, we shared some of the traps we had come up with on Monday. The children then used their plans to help them create their own traps. I wonder if they will work?
On Wednesday, the children came in to find peas in their traps. What a success! We then thought of adjectives to describe Supertato’s appearance and personality and orally rehearsed putting them into full sentences.
On Thursday, we dedicated the morning to End of Year Show practice. It’s coming together nicely and we are just making sure it’s as perfect as can be for you.
On Friday, we thought about the seasons and used our calendar to help us. We discussed the signs of summer and compared this with other seasons we had looked at throughout the year. We worked as a class to help dress Teddy and considered what types of clothing he needed in summer compared to winter.
Congratulations to our Stars of the Week Caspar and Thomas O!
Our Mystery Reader was Elsie’s Grandma! Thank you for coming to share your story with us!
Have a lovely weekend!
