Week Ending 21/06/24

Date: 14th Jun 2024 @ 2:19pm

Happy Friday! What a busy week we have had! We have been busy practising our End of Year Show, continuing our adventure reading ‘The Sea Saw’ and making the most of some of this sunny weather. This week Supertato has been in some hot water and we didn't know whether or not the Evil Pea had got to him. Luckily, he was able to escape using his super strength and super speed. This led us to holding our own Superhero day on Thursday where we imagined we were superheroes. We discussed the type of superpowers we would like to have which was anything from being able to fly to speaking as many languages as we could so we could travel to any country in the world. Impressive stuff!

Uniform

As we near the end of the year, please could I remind you that children are to come to school in normal school uniform except for a  Wednesday or Thursday as these are our PE days. Trainers should only be worn during these days. I have attached our uniform policy which you can find in the downloadable files below. If your child has long hair, please tie this up securely. Rings, necklaces, bracelets, chains or big hair accesories are not appropriate.

Talking Point – "To me, a home is where you feel loved, safe, and cherished.”- Malala Yousafzai

This week is Refugee Week. The theme for Refugee Week 2024 is “Our Home”. From the places we gather to share meals to our collective home, planet earth: everyone is invited to celebrate what our Our Home means to them. We introduced the term ‘refugee’ to the children and discussed reasons why some families have to leave their homes and how they might feel. The children have really taken this year’s theme to heart and shown such compassion in their thoughtful answers to some big questions during collective worship.

Our big question this week is ‘what might children worry about when they start in a new school in a new country and how can we make them feel welcome?’

You can find more information here: https://refugeeweek.org.uk/theme-2024-ourhome/

In Maths, we have been working hard at halving by sharing the 'whole' into two equal groups. We found that both odd and even numbers can be doubled together but only evens can be shared. We used our knowledge our known double facts to investigate different quantities and share them into two equal groups and found that one was always left over if it was odd. The concept that an even number can be halved is true but the language we have been encouraging is ‘can be shared into two equal parts/groups.’ This way halving can be halving one object or sharing an amount into two equal groups. If your child explains why something can/cannot be halved at home, then please upload these to Tapestry. Think about moments that make you say ‘WOW!’ For example, “there are five sweets but two people so we won’t get the same because 5 is an odd number”.

Little Wandle (Phonics)

This term we continue our Phase 4 phonics journey! The children do not learn any new phonemes or graphemes. Instead, they are taught to further manipulate the phonemes and graphemes they have already learnt. They will begin to explore more polysyllabic words (words containing more than one syllable) and read and spell words containing adjacent consonants. E.g. string, milk, brush, scoop etc. Phase 4 requires the children to blend an increasing number of sounds together.

This week we have been making words plural by adding -s or -es and focusing on longer words. The spelling rule is: when the word ends in ‘s’, ‘ss’, ‘z’, ‘ch’, ‘sh’, or ‘x’ you add ‘es’. Why not have a go at seeing which of these words require -s or an -es? Think of a sentence to go with your new word.

  • kiss > kisses
  • brush >
  • dog >
  • push >
  • bird >
  • box >
  • rabbit >

On Monday, we participated in our first school Sport’s Day watched by our loved ones. The children showed great sportsmanship. Thank you for coming to cheer us on!

On Tuesday, we predicted what might happen to Supertato. We recapped what has happened so far and retold the first part of our story by ordering pictures and matching captions to each one.

On Wednesday, we used clues from the story to predict Superhero’s fate. We then used these predictions to write an ending to the story.

On Thursday, we held our own Superhero Day! We discussed what superpowers we would like to have and who we would help and how. The children then drew themselves as a superhero and wrote about their character traits.

On Friday, we thought about friendship and how we could show this with acts of kindness to our friends and family. Jack the Dog shared a story about when Jesus shared breakfast with his disciples. We learnt that we can serve others by helping them. When we help others, we are being like Jesus.

Congratulations to our Stars of the Week, Jude and Florentine!

Our Mystery Reader this week was Gabriella's Mum. Thank you for coming to share your story with us!

Have a lovely weekend!
