Week Ending 13/01/23

Date: 12th Jan 2023 @ 5:09pm

Happy Friday! This week enjoyed an exciting Careers Week in Reception. We have been thinking about what it would like to be a grown up and discussed the different things we want to do when we are older. The children have loved pretending to be lots of different adults this week including doctors and police officers. Thank you so much to those who volunteered to talk to the children about their jobs.

Homework Menu

This term’s homework menu has been sent home in book bags this week. These are suggestions of things to continue your child’s learning at home and great for Show and Tell. Have fun!

Little Wandle (Phonics)

This week we learnt four new sound AI, EE, IGH and OA using the new Little Wandle grapheme cards and phrases. We practised reading these words by decoding and then saying the sounds in our head to read fluently. The children are having lots of opportunity to practise reading fluently in our Reading Practice Sessions. The more the children read, the more fluent they will be! They will be bringing home three books; the one they have shared with their teacher in the sessions (your child can read this independently), a book with closely matched sounds (your child will need help with this) and a library book (a book to share as a family). It is VITAL these are returned in good condition and on time to maintain learning for everyone. Thank you to all the families who returned their book on time this week, it was nearly a 100% success rate! We are so grateful for the care taken over our new books, we want to ensure the children learn to take good care of them too. When reading with your child encourage them to turn the pages themselves and hold the book carefully, thank you.

Supporting phonics at home

For further information on how to support your child with phonics, please visit the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds website: https://www.littlewandlelettersandsounds.org.uk/resources/for-parents/
You will find a grapheme information sheet to help you with pronunciation. It is really important that you pronounce the sounds correctly at home if you are supporting your child. Please see videos on the link provided.

If you have any questions regarding phonics, please speak to your child’s class teacher. Thank you for your continued support.

In Kinetic Letters we have been practising some of the Fisher Family (Y, G, J, F) as well as some Slider Family letters (V, W, X, Z, K). The Fisher Family letters all start from Scared Monkey and go underneath the line to ‘catch’ the fish from the pit. Take care when going under the ‘ground’ as you don’t want to go too far into the pit as Skip’s tail will get stuck in the mud! For Slider Family letters, we need to avoid starting with ‘down bump’, rather ‘sliding’ making a diagonal line to the ground. Keep practising your three friends hold pencil grip at home as this makes all the difference to your child’s writing.

In Maths, we have been thinking about measure. We read the story of ‘Jim and the Beanstalk’ which is a twisted version of the original. In this story, Jim visits the aging giant and helps him by measuring for his new glasses, wig and teeth! The children measured each other and then measured around their own heads to make crowns. We also challenged the children to solve a problem “Are 5-year olds always taller than 4-year olds?” It turns out they are not! If your child talks about measurement at home, then please take a photo and upload to Tapestry!

On Monday, we had a visit from two parents who work in the NHS. They shared with us lots of exciting information about their jobs and left us with some resources to be doctors ourselves!

On Tuesday, we enjoyed two visitors. We listened to Bea’s Dad tell us all about his job as a surveyor. We talked about the building he works on such as dentist practices. We also met Violette’s Mum who told us about her role in the police and ambulance services. She gave us lots of advice about ringing 999, it is crucial you know your address! Some extra homework for this half term is to teach your child the first line of their address and postcode.

On Wednesday, we had a visit from the local PCSOs, Jorge and James. They told us about working in the police service and then let us see their police car. The children asked lots of interesting questions and some even tried on the uniform!

On Thursday, we had a visit from Callum’s parents who are design engineers. They talked to us about all the parts they have designed and made for aircrafts and satellites. We then got the opportunity to make our own aeroplanes and fly them! What fun! Dormice also had a visit from Nancy-May’s mum in the afternoon who talked to them about her job working in the theatre.

On Friday, we enjoyed celebration worship and Wake Up, Shake Up in the morning and had our final careers week visitor in the afternoon. Emily and Gracie’s mum came to tell us about being a nursery nurse. We talked about looking after babies and learn how to change a nappy!

Well done to our Stars of the Week, Vin and Harry.

Our mystery readers this week were Gracie and Emily’s Dad and Seb's Dad. Thank you for coming to share a story with us! Please speak to your child’s class teacher to put a date in the diary if you would like to be mystery reader. We still have many available dates this term so please get in touch if you would like a go!

Have a fantastic weekend!
