Week Ending 05/07/24

Date: 30th Jun 2024 @ 11:51am

Happy Friday! Yet another week has flown by and the children are continuing to let their light shine in all that they do.

School Lunches - PLEASE READ!

As you may be aware, booking your child's lunch is easy to do with the help of ParentPay where you can sit with your child and look towards the week ahead. This is our online booking service and Reception, Year 1 and 2 are all entitled to free school meals. Please can we ask you to take the time to look at the menu for the upcoming week and together choose what they will have each day. The dietary option is specific for those with dietary requirements that our kitchen already know about so please do not click this unless we know about it. The kitchen have been very accomodating this year and made alternatives if your child does not like the options provided. Going forward, please can we ask that if your child is a fussy eater and does not like the menu choices on display that day you bring in a packed lunch from home. The kitchen are not supposed to provide anything other than the menu chocies or specific dietary requirement meals providing that parents have completed the relevant forms. Thank you.

Transition to Year 1 – Monday 8th July (NEXT WEEK)

From Monday, Reception children will no longer use the community entrance to enter school in the morning. As they will do in Year 1, children will be able to enter school in the mornings through the green side gate to the right of the main school entrance or the Poppy Mount car park gate. There will be school staff on the gate in the morning (usually the office staff, Mr Martin, Mrs Forrester or KS2 staff) but EYFS and KS1 staff will meet the children at these gates for the first few days. They will then walk around to the front playground outside of their doors and wait until an EYFS staff member can let them inside. This is to ensure a smoother transition and get them into the habit for their move to Year 1 in September. Messages must be given to office staff on the gate or emailed to the school office, (admin@tarporleyce.cheshire.sch.uk) thank you. The children are more than ready for the challenge of Year 1 and we can’t wait to watch them let their light shine in Key Stage 1!

There will be no EYFS members of staff at the Community Entrance from this day.

International Mud Day! Next Friday!

On Friday 12th July, we will be celebrating the annual event that is International Mud Day. In the afternoon, children are given the opportunity to wallow in mud, cake themselves in clay, indulge in some body painting and squish gloop to their hearts content. We believe that Mud Day gives children the opportunity to connect with nature and show them how amazing and brilliant mud can be, and the range of ways it can be used and enjoyed. Whether that’s squelching, splatting, splashing, stirring, scooping, sprinkling or stamping, playing in mud is one of the best parts of being 5! The children need to wear messy clothes that you don’t mind getting muddy/may need throwing away. Please bring a towel and a spare change of clothes for them to get dressed into warmer attire at the end of the day.

You will need:

  • an old towel
  • old clothes you don't mind getting muddy or that can be thrown away
  • Spare change of clothes including pants and socks!

Dates for the diary this half term:

Friday 12th July - International Mud Day celebrations- messy clothes needed!

Tuesday 16th July - Meet the Teacher (Your child will spend the afternoon in their new class getting to know their new teacher and play in the classroom)

Wednesday 17th July – End of Year Show at the Baptist Methodist Church starting at 9:15am. If you are available to help either class walk down then let the class teacher know please. We will need walkers from 8:55am ish!

Little Wandle (Phonics)

This term we continue our Phase 4 phonics journey! The children do not learn any new phonemes or graphemes. Instead, they are taught to further manipulate the phonemes and graphemes they have already learnt. They will begin to explore more polysyllabic words (words containing more than one syllable) and read and spell words containing adjacent consonants. E.g. string, milk, brush, scoop etc. Phase 4 requires the children to blend an increasing number of sounds together.

This week we have had been thinking about suffixes such as -er and -est. It is important that the children learn to chunk the word to read and spell for example, b/r/igh/t/er or g/r/ee/n/est When blending words with -est sometimes we say them as /ist/. These will be further consolidated in Year 1. The children have been taught that these are called suffixes and we add them to ‘root’ words. They have really enjoyed identifying the root word which have significantly supported their spelling of these longer words ensuring they are not missing out any sounds.

In Maths, we have been learning about measurement, particularly focussing on capacity. We read then story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears and made porridge for the bears. We measured the right amount of oats for Daddy, Mummy and baby bear using their different sized bowls. We have been learning the terminology ‘full, part-full and empty to compare different volumes and capacities. You may want to replicate some capacity activities by using different containers with sand or water.

On Monday, we received a letter from Supertato thanking us for recapturing the evil peas with our traps. We finished the story and created a story map to retell the main parts in order.

On Tuesday, as Year 2 were out on their residential we enjoyed a morning of PE with Mr Elton as we continued to practise our cricket skills.

On Wednesday, we created our own Wanted poster for the evil pea using adjectives to write a character description. This is our final piece of written work for the year and will be the first piece of work on the wall when we enter our new class in Year 1. These are now uploaded to Tapestry where you can find your child’s writing target too.

On Thursday afternoon, we read the story Blue Chameleon which focuses on making friends with someone different. We linked this to transition and talked about how our differences make us who we are.

On Friday, we practised the routes the children will take when they come to school on Monday (either the side gate or via Poppy Lane car park). Jack the Dog also told us the story about Jesus going back to heaven and promising to send the Holy Spirit.

Our Mystery Reader this week was Polly's mum. Thank you for coming to share your story with us!

Congratulations to our Stars of the Week, Lara and Maggie!

Have a lovely weekend!
