The Squabbits

We have had a marvellous time these last 2 days. The children took everything in their stride and seemed to love the change in dynamics. First, we tried to get to grips with doing 2 registers and 2 lunch menus (please check your child wants what you have ordered. It is really difficult for me to change it and both days we had 5 Rabbits refuse to have the chosen meals. #nightmareforme.)

Then we changed our learning partners. We sat in circle and when their name was called out, they elbowed bumped their new partner, said hi and sat with them. Because we had equal boy/girl ratio we had boy/girl partners (I am not usually so gender-specific) We did PE both days as our new Y2 class and also did some writing with me. They wrote some hilarious (but kind!) things about the fab adults who work with them.

We did our usual maths lessons but we have moved onto the Y2 squared paper which seems tiny and this alone is enough to make them fizzy with excitement! (Reasons to Love KS1 over KS2 number 32). We did inside/outside playtime so they could choose where to play and were respectful when we did Ray of the day.

Today we have managed reading practice, changed old/new books (get me!), done more maths with the teeny-tiny squares (number bonds to 10 and drawing 2D shapes with a ruler), slid a little with Cha Cha Slide, and learnt some French. We got a little nervous using it at lunchtime (oui s’il-vous plait, merci) but get them to try to remember how to say hello, how are you, what’s your name, my name is.. at home. And also find France on a map!

Talking of languages…all of them greeted me today and yesterday with ‘Buenas! Que tal? Bueno’ and an elbow bump. Fantastico! Next week, Chinese??

We had a couple of visitors join us over the last 2 days and their behaviour was – as anticipated- excellent. They are definitely getting tired and choices are compromised more than usual at some times of the day; maybe they are expecting a ‘rundown’ to summer? ‘Fraid not! We will keep the routine and learning to the very end but there will be a little flexibility to the tasks. Next week in maths we are doing capacity so start getting them to notice litre labels, and tangrams (Old Chinese puzzles)

But highlights of the last 2 days as Squabbits for me personally: the smiles, the confidence, the chattiness between each other, the openness to learning, the moving of tables and chairs in a co-ordinated, safe way, the taking care of each other and their enthusiasm. Thank you Squabbits- it’s been a pleasure!
