Snowy Squirrels 9th March

Date: 9th Mar 2023 @ 5:45pm

More snow?? I know I'm 'up north' (compared to Bournemouth) but we have put the spring picture on our calendar and snow and fog were distinctly put away somewhere not to used for many months! We did manage a few minutes in the slush just before playtime today (Thursday) so always come prepared for outside time in the school day.

In other news we are really getting into our book 'My name is not refugee' (an unintentionally topical theme at the moment!). We are trying to work out what a refugee is compared to someone who emigrated or moved countries. We are talking a lot about 'wants' vs 'needs' as many thought that the iPad and other electronic gadgets were absolutely going in the bag if they had to leave quickly and could only take what they could carry! We are also reading A Bear Called Paddington which compares nicely with our other book, seeing as he was also a refugee. If you're going to London over Easter make sure  you point out Paddington station on the underground- our last chapter was all about an escalator adventure. Feel free to watch the recent-ish movie as it won't spoil our reading. They can spot the differences to the text.

In maths, year 1 are finishing the subtraction unit and year 2 have just started division. Moving from the concrete resources to the pictorial and then the written is our way to develop their maths reasoning, knowledge and confidence. I'm not a big fan of Twinkl (*professional disclaimer!)  but they do do some decent home learning worksheets if you're interested. Or you could go to PurpleMash and there are a number of '2Dos' for each child which would also provide the practice they need to be skilled mathematicians. And don't forget all the maths games we've been doing - shut the box, pairs, wipeout.

How is Lent going? Our week of 'wants/needs and refugees as well as learning about miracles (Feeding the 5000) has lent itself beautifully to discussing sacrifices. Pun intended. I hope they told you about their own decisions of kindness, sacrifice and prayer. What they are prepared to do without for the rest of the month might be surprising. I love my class so much! They give me so much joy. Mrs Line, Mrs Hart and I are often stifling our laughter at their wonderful suggestions and ideas and faux pas; like the child who was absolutely determined to find a way to take their phone in their refugee bag with 'hundreds of batteries' or the child who asked if I saw the bears running around during the great fire of Nantwich!

On that note, I'll look forward to them wheeling me into our class assembly next Wednesday 9am (max 30mins).
