PSHE Curriculum
Our approach
At Tarporley CE Primary School, we recognise the vital role that Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) plays in developing the whole child.
Our PSHE curriculum helps children to understand themselves, their relationships with others and their place within the local, national and global community. We
want every child to feel valued, develop a strong sense of self-worth and understand that they have an important contribution to make.
As a Church of England school, our Christian Values of Love, Friendship, Trust, Hope, Forgiveness, Joy and Celebration underpin our approach. We encourage children to develop kindness, respect, acceptance and a sense of responsibility towards themselves and others.
We want our children to become healthy, confident, independent and responsible members of society who are able to make informed choices, understand their rights and responsibilities and contribute positively to their communities.
Through PSHE, we want our children to:
- understand how to lead healthy and safe lives;
- develop positive and respectful relationships;
- recognise and value their own strengths and those of others;
- develop confidence, resilience and self-esteem;
- understand their rights and responsibilities;
- make informed choices and understand the consequences of their actions;
- understand and respect diversity;
- contribute positively to school and the wider community;
- develop an understanding of citizenship and democracy;
- develop an understanding of money and financial responsibility;
- develop the knowledge and skills they need to make positive choices as they grow.
Our BOOKS Approach To PSHE
Our PSHE curriculum is planned and delivered through our BOOKS approach, ensuring that all learners have opportunities to grow and reach their full potential.
B – Bravery
We encourage children to develop confidence, resilience and the courage to make positive choices, try new things and learn from their experiences.
O – Outward-Facing
We help children understand themselves, their community and the wider world, recognising their responsibilities towards others and the importance of acceptance and respect.
O – Opportunities
We provide memorable experiences that develop children's confidence, independence, leadership and ability to contribute positively to school and the wider community.
K – Knowledge & Skills
We develop the knowledge and practical skills children need to keep themselves healthy and safe, make informed choices, manage their money and take responsibility for themselves and others.
S – Spirituality
We encourage children to reflect, consider their values and develop a sense of belonging, purpose and respect for themselves, others and the world around them.

How do we teach PSHE?
PSHE is taught in a variety of ways across the school. We use discussion, role play, investigation, problem-solving, reflection and practical activities to encourage children to think, question and apply their learning to real-life situations.
Our PSHE provision is supported by a range of carefully selected programmes and resources.
No Outsiders
We use high-quality children's books to explore equality, diversity, tolerance and respect. The books encourage children to think, question and reconsider their ideas, helping them to understand and celebrate difference and develop a strong sense of belonging.
Picture News
Through weekly current news stories, children learn about the world around them and are encouraged to look beyond their own experiences. Stories, articles, images and questions help children develop their understanding of current issues and different perspectives.
Kapow
Kapow provides structured learning opportunities across key areas of PSHE, helping children develop their knowledge, understanding and practical skills as they progress through school.
HeartSmart
HeartSmart supports our children's personal development and emotional wellbeing. It encourages children to understand their emotions, develop positive relationships, make healthy choices and build the skills they need to flourish.
MoneySense
MoneySense supports children's financial education and helps them develop an understanding of money, saving, spending, choices and financial responsibility in an age-appropriate way.
Learning across the curriculum
PSHE themes are also developed through other areas of the curriculum where meaningful connections can be made. For example, children may explore environmental issues through Geography, develop their understanding of values and beliefs through RE, or learn about healthy lifestyles and their bodies through Science.
PSHE is also developed through whole-school experiences, including charitable activities, school events, leadership opportunities and residential experiences, which help children develop confidence, teamwork, cooperation and a sense of responsibility.
Acceptance, Respect and Belonging
At the heart of our PSHE curriculum is the belief that everyone is valued and everyone should feel that they belong.
We encourage children to recognise and celebrate differences, treat others with kindness and respect and understand that everyone has the right to feel safe and included.
Through our Christian ethos and the use of No Outsiders, children explore age-appropriate themes around diversity, inclusion, respect and belonging. We want our children to understand that differences are something to be valued and celebrated.
Healthy, Safe and Responsible Choices
PSHE helps children develop the knowledge and skills they need to look after their physical and emotional wellbeing, keep themselves safe and make positive choices.
Children are encouraged to develop confidence and self-esteem, understand the importance of healthy lifestyles, recognise potential risks and know how to seek help when they need it.
Our RSE curriculum is taught separately and provides further information about relationships, growing and changing, puberty, personal boundaries and staying safe.
Developing Responsible Citizens
PSHE helps children understand their role within their school, local and wider community.
Children are encouraged to participate in democratic processes, take responsibility for their actions, work collaboratively, understand different perspectives and make positive contributions to the lives of others.
We also help children develop an understanding of money and financial responsibility and prepare them to play an active role as citizens in a diverse society.
Supporting Every Child
PSHE is taught inclusively and learning is adapted to meet the individual needs of all pupils. We recognise that children develop at different rates and provide appropriate support and challenge so that every child can participate fully in their learning.
Our PSHE Curriculum
Our PSHE curriculum is reviewed regularly to ensure that it continues to meet the needs of our pupils and reflects our Christian vision, the wider curriculum and our responsibilities as a school.
