Weekly Blog 16/02/24

Date: 27th Jan 2024 @ 7:16pm

Happy Friday! We made it. We’re halfway through the year already and just look at how far our Dazzling Dormice have come. On Wednesday, it marked our 100th Day in Reception. A hundred days of laughter and learning have come and gone, and it’s time to reflect on everything that the children have to show for it! Take a moment to celebrate these last five months, what can your child do now that they couldn’t perhaps do before? It’s amazing when you think about the progress they have made so far. We can’t wait to see what the next 100 days has in store. Watch this space!

Dates for the diary for next half term!

  • Thursday 7th March – World Book Day (Bedtime story theme- wear pyjamas to school or dress up as your favourite book character.)
  • Wednesday 27thMarch – Dormice class assembly (9am – school hall)

Little Wandle (Phonics)

This week we have been revising some Phase 3 sounds based on the assessment results. The children have worked so hard this half term and we have enjoyed watching them blossom into more fluent readers. Please continue to read with your child as much as possible over the half term and record it in their reading record. This way we know which books you have read and which ones that need to be exchanged.

Due to the business that this week has brought, we have not had time to do our usual three reading practice sessions. However, your child will have a Little Wandle book that closely matches their current stage of learning.

Kinetic Letters

Now the children are more confident in their letter formation, we will be starting to practise more words and sentences in these sessions. Please do use the laminated whiteboards that were placed in your child’s book bag at Christmas if you would like to continue this at home.

Maths

With it being Shrove Tuesday next week, we read the story ‘Mr Wolf’s Pancakes’ who had written us a letter asking for help counting out his money to buy the ingredients he needed. We showed the children a 1p, 2p and 5p and explained that there are not coins for every number and matched the numicon to each value. We used our number bond knowledge to 7 to find different ways to making certain amounts of money. For example, 6p could be 2p + 2p + 2p or 5p + 1p. There is more than one way! There are lots of opportunities to explore money outside of the classroom. Write a list for the next time you go shopping, set up your own role play and pretend to be the shopkeeper – use real money! The children have really enjoyed looking at the different coin values and using this in their play.

On Monday, we read the No Outsiders story ‘You Choose’ and focused on a key part of the Early Years Curriculum, Communication and Language. We asked the children to decide between two choices and to say what they think. We then played games that developed turn taking.

On Tuesday, we went on our whole school trip to Chester Zoo! We had the best day ever and even managed to see our class name on the Reptile house having sponsored a caiman after learning about how they are an endangered species.

On Wednesday, we read a story called ‘Red Rockets and Rainbow Jelly’ and focused on how everyone has likes and dislikes and that’s okay. It teaches us about how we can like different things and still be friends.

On Thursday, we learnt about the history of Pancake Day! We made an obstacle course outside where the children participated in a traditional pancake race and used spatial language to describe the route. We enjoyed eating them up as promised by Mr Wolf himself.

On Friday, we had a very special Stay and Play with our loved ones. Thank you for coming into school. The children were excited to show you the ins and outs of Reception life.

Congratulations to our Stars of the Half Term, Dylan!

Our mystery reader this week for the final time as a Dormouse class was Miss Selwyn! On behalf of myself and Mrs Line we wish you a relaxing and restful half term break. Thank you for your ongoing support in your child’s school journey since September. We look forward to seeing you again on Monday 26th February at 8:40am. It's not goodbye, it's just see you soon!
