Hedgehogs (Reception) 2021 - 2022

Miss Nicholas

Mrs Palmer

Welcome to Hedgehog class! This is where the adventure begins...

Miss Nicholas and Mrs Line

We love learning outside, exploring our wonderful woodlands and local environment; inventing in the mud kitchen, water, sand and playhouse; developing our physical skills riding bikes, climbing on the adventure playground, and playing with PE equipment. We love the large construction. Dressing up and performing on the stage with instruments is great fun! Our quiet learning area enables us to develop smallworld skills whilst getting plenty of fresh air.

Inside, we enjoy our creative and writing table, playdoh, construction activities, technology area, small world, fine motor activities, phonics area and number area. We like quiet time in our reading corner and reflection area. We also love listening to stories, singing songs and playing with our friends.

We have daily phonics and numeracy small group sessions in which we learn to read, write, count and develop maths skills which we can then apply during our play. We follow Kinetic Letters to help us with our fine motor skills and handwriting.

Each afternoon we have the opportunity to explore and learn through a thematic approach. Through books and stories we develop our creativity. We design, draw, paint and build. Remember, we're not making a mess...we are learning! We use our communication, language and literacy skills. We share books, make story maps, create our own stories and take part in drama based activities. As the year progresses we write more and more! We love to answer questions! We explore the world around us and take part in a range of different STEM activities. Can you build an boat that floats using an apple? What material should the three pigs use for their houses? Can you build a zip wire for a Cadburys Creme Egg? We will be developing our knowledge and understanding of people and our community. We have many opportunities during the afternoon to explore through different activites. We spend time exploring our extensive school grounds and local area. We use our woodlands to build campfires and learn about nature. We can choose to spend time in our allotment or go pond dipping....we have a good selection of creatures to find! We love to go out and about in Tarporley and regularly go on local area walks. Sometimes we use our mini bus to visit Delamere Forest or walk up Bulkeley Hill. There's so much to explore!

On a Friday, we invite a mystery reader into our class to come and read us a story at the end of the day.... we don't know who it is until they arrive! We love it when our parents and family come and read us stories.

In order to help your child make maximum progress throughout Reception, we have included some parent aids at the bottom of the page which will help you support your child at home.

Story Time at Tarporley CE

Once a half term our Reception classroom and fantastic outdoor learning spaces will be opened up for younger members of the community to come and enjoy an interactive storytime with their parents or family members. Each session will last for 1 hour and there will be juice and biscuits for the children and a well deserved cup of tea for the adults. This is a fantastic opportunity for children to spend time over the year with EYFS staff and become familiar with the school environment. This makes transition to school a much smoother process with the children already confident in the classroom.
