Week Ending 21/12/23

Date: 6th Dec 2023 @ 8:42pm

Happy last day of the Autumn term! It seems like only yesterday that we were writing the first blog of this academic year congratulating the children on a fantastic first week of school. Now it’s like they have always been a part of our school family! We are so proud of the children for all of their hard work and progress this term, thank you for all your support at home.

If you would like to recycle your child's advent calendar...then we have the perfect game for you! Simply take the plastic out of the middle and write graphemes that the children know behind each door. Then you can have hours of fun creating codes for the children to solve!

Little Wandle – Phonics

This week we have consolidated all of the learning we have done this term. I have completed their Autumn 2 phonics assessment with them and these are now recorded in your child's reading record along with next steps. Please ensure you do look at these as to give you an indication of what we will be working on in school with your child. We are sending home 1 sharing book, 2 Little Wandle books and 1 non-decodable book for the Christmas holidays. These MUST be returned on time for Thursday 11th January ready for the next reading group to read. Thank you for your continued support with reading this term. We look forward to growing our brains more in Spring 1 when we begin our Phase 3 journey.

Kinetic Letters

We have now completed the Abracadabra Family and Window Family where we practised 'Q' and 'U'. We have done this to not confuse the children as we never have 'qq' on its own. The letter has a best friend in 'U' so we teach these together. After that, we have revised all of the letters we have learnt so far (which has been a lot!). We only have two more families to learn before we know how to write them all. I have laminated a writing whiteboard and put this in your child's book bag if they would like to practise their writing at home. This is optional. If they do decided to do some writing over the break, please upload it to Tapestry for us to see too!

In Maths, we have continued to learn about 2D shapes and their properties (how many corners, sides it has). The Numberblocks video 'Flatland' is a great visual for learning the names and the difference between a square and a rectangle which is very important. Christmas is a great time for learning about shapes as they are all around us. What shape is a picture of a snowman? What shape do you draw for a Christmas tree? Don’t forget that children need to understand the difference between 2D and 3D shapes… a football is not a circle as it is a 3D shape.

On Monday, we had a special performance from BTales who put on a fantastic show about the Nativity. We loved joining in!

On Tuesday, we had our Christmas party! Lots of great games, sweets and the chance to dress up in our festive frocks.

On Wednesday, it was Christmas Dinner Day. We enjoyed sharing a delicious, traditional Christmas meal from our amazing school kitchen team…served by the staff!

On Thursday, we had our final celebration assembly of the term. Everyone was definitely tired today so we had fun playing in the classroom with our toys from home. The children shared beautifully.

Show and Tell

We will be holding a very special Christmas Show and Tell for Reception on Monday 8th January. The children are allowed to bring in one toy that they got for Christmas to share with the rest of the class. No electronics or expensive/breakable presents! We recommend games or toys that can be shared with others such as board games. I will send a reminder the day before we come back.

Congratulations to our Star of the Term, Aarya!

Our Mystery Reader this week was Yasmin’s Mum. Thank you for coming to share a story with us!

We wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
