Happy Friday! This week we have finally finished our class text ‘Let’s All Creep Through Crocodile Creek!’ The children have absolutely loved finding out more about crocodiles over the past few weeks. At the end of the story, the characters safely exit the creek and decide to enter the forest…where a tiger’s tail can be seen! As the children have enjoyed learning about animals so much, we will be following their interests next week and becoming ‘courageous advocates’. This simply means ‘speaking out against injustice for those whose voices cannot be heard’. We will be talking about how these animals have become endangered and are planning to raise money to sponsor a caiman at Chester Zoo. Please have some change in your pocket next Thursday after school (3rd Feb) as there will be a pop-up cake sale run by our children (for only Reception children to purchase). The children don’t know this yet though!

This week in phonics we have learnt four new sounds; SH, TH, NG and NK. We have also learnt the harder to read and spell word: PUSH. These will be in your online reading books for this week as the children begin to read longer sentences. As a school, we are working towards buying enough books for each child to bring home a book at the end of the week which contains the four sounds learnt that week. Until we have built up the collection, please prioritise re-reading the Oxford Owl books as they will give the chance for your child to practice the new sounds of the week. The book in their book bag may not always contain those exact sounds (it will be closely matched though). Some parents have made us aware that the books disappear from Oxford Owl once you click that you have finished. In order to read the books multiple times, you may have to refrain from clicking that you have read the book until you have read it a couple of times.

In Maths, we have been focusing on the numbers eight and nine. We watched the videos (which I have linked below) and revisited counting objects accurately to eight and nine. As the numbers get bigger, it’s easy to miss a few! We also split the numbers into a part whole model and thought about which numbers add together to make 8 and 9. If you see your child adding to eight and nine accurately at home then upload your observation to Tapestry. We love showing you what your child can do at school but we also like to see your child using their learning at home. Think about moments that make you say ‘WOW!’

On Monday, we used musical instruments and played along to a range of nursery rhymes and performed for our friends.  We learnt ‘Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed’.

On Tuesday, we read some more pages from the book ‘Let’s All Creep Through Crocodile Creek’. We used watercolours to reveal secret messages written in wax which warned the animals not to venture into the creek, if only they had been able to read the secret messages!

On Wednesday, we listened to the song ‘Never Smile at a Crocodile’. We used this to inspire our own list of rules for the creek.

On Thursday, we couldn’t use the hall and the apparatus so we made the most of the sun and went outside. We played some invasion games on the MUGA and then used the parachute. We also did some French with Miss Selwyn and learnt some more numbers.

On Friday, we finally finished the story ‘Let’s All Creep Through Crocodile Creek’. The animals managed to escape the jaws of the crocodile but then they ran into a tiger! We learnt some more about tigers and labelled pictures.

Congratulations to our Stars of the Week, Mia and Alice!

Our mystery readers this week was Lewis' Mum. Thank you for coming to share a story with us! Please speak to your child’s class teacher to put a date in the diary if you would like to be mystery reader.

Both classes need a new mystery reader for the next few weeks so please do come and see us if you're interested!!!

Have a fantastic weekend!
