Week Ending 07/01/22

Date: 3rd Jan 2022 @ 11:27am

Happy New Year! Welcome back to the Spring term. We hope you and your loved ones had a wonderful Christmas and we wish you a very prosperous new year. We welcomed our two student teachers to Dormice and Hedgehog class who will be with us until half term. Miss Johnson will be working with Dormice class and Miss Flemington will be in Hedgehog class.

This week we have been introduced to our new story book 'Let's All Creep Through Crocodile Creek' which takes us on an adventure through a creek. We have been thinking about the different journeys we make day-to-day (house to school, to the park, to Delamere forest). The children had lots of ideas about the journeys they had made over the Christmas holidays including visits to Santa, light trails and exploring new places. Next week we will be sharing our experiences of holidays and writing labels to describe them. if you have any photos of you on holiday that your child can bring in (preferably ones that you don't mind being labelled or covered in pen) then please do send them in for next Tuesday. Alternatively you may want to bring in a photocopy or send us any photos and we can print them off in school. Please don't worry if you don't send anything in, we have resources in school.

This week in phonics we have been revising all of the phase 2 letters and sounds we learnt last term. These sounds include: S, A, T, P, I, N, M, D, G, O, C, K, CK, E, U, R, H, B, F, FF, L, LL, SS. If your child is struggling with some of these letters and sounds, we have reset all Phase 2 books on Oxford Owl where you can continue to practice these at home. Please see your child’s reading record for their next steps in phonics (including missing sounds).
Now the children are starting to become familiar with the formation of these letters through our handwriting scheme (Kinetic Letters) we have introduced separate daily Kinetic Letters and phonics lessons. Each morning the children will come into school and have a quick 15-minute burst of purely letter formation then we will have a short Wake Up Shake Up before going into phonics where we can apply our phonics knowledge into our reading sessions.

Next week we will be starting Phase 3 which introduces new digraphs and even some trigraphs (three letters that make one sound)! We will be setting new decodable books on Oxford Owl which closely match the first four sounds we will be learning (as per last half term).

In Maths, we have been focusing on 'length and measurement', in particular the language of describing different lengths. E.g. short, long, shortest, longest. Playdough is an excellent way of learning through play as we have been creating snakes with different lengths and asking questions. Can you make a thick snake? A thin snake? Show me the longest snake you can make? We have even started to use non-standard units of measurement to measure the length of a snake using unifix cubes.

On Wednesday, we started our brand new story 'Let's all Creep Through Crocodile Creep' by receiving a letter that had been left for us in the classroom by three friends, Rabbit, Tortoise and Mouse who had been on an adventure. We discussed the different journeys we had been on and started creating story maps of these journeys then labelled them using our phonic knowledge.

On Thursday, we held our Christmas Show and Tell which was super exciting! The children were very brave and told the class all about their toy and we had the opportunity to play and share our toys with each other! We were so impressed with how grown up they were! We had a singing practice with Mrs Line who introduced us to some of our favourite songs in school (linked below).

On Friday, we had our first Wake Up Shake Up of 2022 and what a blast we had dancing and moving to our favourite songs. We also had class worship where we thought about Desmond Tutu and read a story about how we are all different but the same.

Our mystery reader this week was Louisa's mum. Thank you for coming to share a story with us! Please speak to your child’s class teacher to put a date in the diary if you would like to be mystery reader.

URGENT APPEAL!

Both classes need a new mystery reader for the next few weeks so please do come and see us if you're interested!!!

Have a fantastic weekend!
