English and SPaG

At Tarporley we embed our English teaching through the whole curriculum allowing our children to 'Let their Lights Shine'. Our BOOKS approach enables all our learners to flourish.

During our daily English lessons we follow the Pathways planning and learning scheme. This is to ensure our children develop a love of language and become capable, confident writers.

More information about the skills covered within the year groups can be found below.

Within the new curriculum, Spelling Grammar And Punctuation, have a big focus.

As a school we embed the teaching of SPAG in our daily English lessons and teach discrete sessions on SPAG.  We use many fun games and learning activities to help children to learn SPAG, for example Kung Fu Punctuation, and we use the 'posh' terminology for grammar, such as modal verb, fronted adverbial, noun phrase, subordinate clause.  As part of SPAG we also teach VCOP (Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers and Punctuation) during Big Writing sessions and as lesson starters.

As a school we have created a Grammar terminology document to support your child at home with learning grammar.  We have also uploaded other useful Grammar documents for you to look at.

The following websites provide SPAG activities, games and videos. We hope you and your child find them useful.
