Year 1 2018 - 2019

Mrs Brocklehurst

Mrs Robins

Welcome to Rabbit Class

In Year 1 we enjoy learning, always try our best and never give up!

Our teacher is Miss Selwyn.

Mrs Robins works with us as our Teaching Assistant.

Our Class Information Booklet is attached.

  • Explanation writing - machines, games and life-cycles.
  • Fantasy Writing
  • Traditional poetry
  • Information Writing
  • Leaflets
  • Story writing - structure, planning and editing

As always, we will be working on our Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPaG) whenever we write.

We love reading and we have a super Reading Corner with a mix of fiction and non-fiction books to read.  Your child will have two Guided Reading sessions each week. This involves reading with a teacher/teaching assistant in a small group. There will be a discussion around the book which may include: features on fiction and non-fiction books, characters’ actions and feelings, spotting spelling patterns/rhyme/repetition, the context for the book, similar situations we have experienced, links to other books read etc. These sessions develop broad reading skills and support comprehension as well as the mechanics of reading.

In Maths we are learning about:

  • place value
  • doubling and halving
  • time
  • addition and subtraction
  • fractions of shape and number
  • money
  • multiplication and division
  • capacity and weight
  • position and movement

We will be working really hard to develop our reasoning skills in Maths throughout our weekly learning activities. We have to be able to apply our maths knowledge and explain why things happen.

We are building on our Programming skills by working with the Beebots to link to position and movement in Maths.

We'll be working on Creating Digital Media (diaries) linked to our science topic.

Physical Education

Your child will have PE lessons during the week on Monday and Friday. On a Wednesday the P.E. session will be taught by Mr Kelsall and Mrs Robins. On a Friday by Miss Selwyn. We ask that you ensure that your child has the appropriate kit in school for indoor and outdoor activities. Could children please make sure that they are not wearing earrings on P.E. days. For outdoor games sessions, children will need appropriate outdoor clothing and trainers.

Children have hymn practise every Thursday and cover music topics with Mrs Robins every Thursday afternoon.

Spellings will be given out on a Friday; these will be linked to the phonics your child is taught during phonics sessions. Spelling tests will take place each Thursday to test the spellings that children have taken home the previous week.

After Christmas homework will be given out on a Friday and should be handed in by the following Thursday. This homework will usually be Maths-based but may occasionally be related to Literacy or Topic. Big Write will continue to be completed on a Friday so Big Talk information will be sent out on a Thursday.

Children are also encouraged to take books home and read as much as possible, ideally at least 3 times a week. The more the better! Please record this in your child’s reading record. Children will read in school at least twice each week, including guided and individual reading.
